Alkmaar has gathered a reputation as “City of Sports”. Why? Because the city has a positive attitude towards all kinds (of levels) of sports. The city recognizes sports as an important part in life of many people. Therefore Alkmaar encourages and support these kind of events.
In 2016 the International Childrens Games (ICG) took place in Alkmaar. The ICG is an International Olympic Committee supported event. These games offered children between the age of 12 and 15 from cities all around the world a variety of sports and cultural activities. Until today Alkmaar is the only Dutch city which hosted the games since they started in 1968.
In the summer of 2019 Alkmaar hosted the European Cycling Championship. This event contained a total of six road races and seven time trials. The Elite Men Road Race was won by Elia Vivani, while Amy Pieters won the European title in the women’s race.
Next year the ALKMAAR INTERNATIONAL YOUTH BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT (AIYBT) takes place. The tournament is scheduled from May 22 till May 24 2020.
The tournament will take place across Alkmaar and has the mainstage in De Rijp, home of Derba, the club celebrating their 50th birthday.
